History of the Cummerbund

The cummerbund has a long history dating back to British colonial India in the 19th century. Originally worn by military officers to keep their uniforms clean, the cummerbund was adopted by the civilian population as a way to add elegance to formal attire.

The word "cummerbund" comes from the Hindi word "kamarband," which means "waistband." Today, cummerbunds are still worn as part of traditional attire in some cultures, but they have also been modernized and can be found in a variety of colors and patterns, even making appearances in more casual outfits.
